The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ) is the Professional flight training division of New Zealand's largest Aero Club, the Canterbury Aero Club (established 1928.) The International Aviation Academy of New Zealand holds New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (NZ CAA) Part 141 approval for flight training.

The Academy is unique in that it operates from a large international airport, with full instrument approach aids. The experience gained in this airline environment gives our graduates a significant advantage when pursuing an aviation career.Additionally our own satellite airfield at West Melton is clear of busy airspace, and provides an ideal alternative, particularly for students during early stages of training. The International Aviation Academy offers

Pilot Training Course Info

  • Intake Dates

    Feb, May and August 2016

  • Courses Offered

    Private Pilot's License
    This course includes six theory papers and 55 hours flight time over 12 weeks. The course is suitable for students interested in flying for recreational use and is available to self funded students only. International students applying for this course require a visa. Training for up to three months can be done on a visitor's visa. Once the three month visa period is up, training cannot continue.

    Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
    Average 40 weeks, and based on 200 hours flight time and includes PPL. From start through to Commercial Pilot License, this 10 month program is suitable for students interested in a career in scenic and agricultural operations. Course costs include all theory, flight training, books, publications, license and exam fees and airways charges.

    Commercial Pilot License / Instrument Rating (Multi Engine)
    (CPL MEIR)
    Average 52 weeks and based on 230 hours flight time, includes PPL. From start through to Commercial Pilot License and Multi Engine Instrument rating this 52 week program is designed for the student whose primary goal is an airline career. Course costs include all theory, flight training, books, publications, license fees, exam fees, and airways charges.

    Flight Instructor Rating
    This NZQA approved course is based on 12 weeks of study: six weeks are used to build hours and six weeks are classroom study. Costs for this elective include the air instruction components: Instructional Techniques Practical, Instructional Techniques Theory, Aerodynamics, Pre-Flight Briefings, exams and flight tests.

  • Requirements

    18 years or older at the commencement of training
    Successfully completed the IAANZ Placement Test
    English language to a level of IELTS 5.5
    Have graduated High School – SPM or equivalent
    CAA NZ Aviation Medical Class 1

  • Uniforms

    All flight training students will be required to wear a uniform. This is supplied through the Academy. It consists of black trousers, socks, white shirt with epaulettes, Academy tie and Academy jacket.You will be required to provide your own black shoes. The professional image of our students reflects their professional training environment and the requirements of the Academy that accepts only the highest standards from its students and graduates.

  • Location

    We are located in Christchurch City, New Zealand, on the West side of Christchurch International Airport, about 8km from the centre of the city.  The Academy is unique in that it has access to both a grass runway located directly in front of the Academy's buildings and to two international standard sealed runways.  We also have our own satellite airfield at West Melton, just six minutes flight time from Christchurch International Airport.
